Topic 6: The word of God has taste; you can enjoy it
Pastor Maselo Mosomane
Like food to our bodies, the word of God is our basic source of sustenance. We cannot live our lives as the Lord has purposed unless we feed on the word of God. All was created by Him for Himself through the Word and all find its reason for existence in Him. If you want to know what your purpose is in life; check it in the word of God; you will find it there. God created us all and not only did He create us; He provided a blueprint for every one of us and everything He created no matter what size.
Many of us are still seeking; others are still asking where the blueprint is. He placed it in His word for us to follow and realize His purpose for our lives. “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” 2 Peter 1:21. Not only did they speak; they wrote too. “Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” Exodus 34:27
Someone once said; “if you want to hide something for people, hide it in the book.” But I want to say something different. If you want someone to blossom and bear much fruit, get him into the word of God. We as preachers are been entrusted with this task; and seeing that we have this ministry; we faint not. We will use whatever means of communication to reveal this mystery to God’s creation. The word of God has in it God’s purpose for every individual on earth. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11. I like it in The Message Translation; “I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.”
God knows what He is doing and what it means for us when He instructs us to feed upon His word. He is not going to figure out what to do when we are in trouble; He has it all planned out. Our lives are fully planned. All we have to do is to walk into the plan. Not by accident nor by luck; by God’s plan and purpose and the lowdown is found in His word. He chose to reveal our plans through His word and it will remain as is until Jesus comes back again.
The word of God is food, as we’ve already said. We all know that for every food to gain the eater’s tolerance it’s got to be palatable. God gave us a sense of taste to enjoy food. We first taste the food with our taste buds. This tasting business takes place in the mouth. When our taste buds approve; we swallow and it goes down sweet.
Ezekiel had the same feeding experience with the word of God. One day God instructed him to eat the scroll. Here is Ezekiel’s story in his own words. “Moreover He said to me, ‘Son of man, eat what you find; eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.’ So I opened my mouth, and He caused me to eat that scroll. And He said to me, “Son of man, feed your belly, and fill your stomach with this scroll that I give you.” So I ate, and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness.” Ezekiel 3:1-2
The word of God has taste; it is not dull. It is as sweet as honey. It is this sweetness that encourages us to feed our bellies, and fill our stomachs. When we think of the word of God; craving drives us to the bible and we devour it like Ezekiel did. Jesus said we are blessed when we hunger and thirst for we shall be filled. The word of God is not dessert nor snacks; it is main course my man – it is our staple food. We can’t live without it. Some people snack on the word of God and they wonder why they don’t get transformed.
The word of God ignites joy in our lives. A person who feeds on the word has joy. Joy is the fruit of the spirit as mentioned in Galatians 5:22. When the bible talks about joy; understand that it is not talking about a trouble-free type of life. Joy is this kind of spiritual fruit that makes one prevail in spite of the situation he might be faced with. Joy does not take away the problem; it conquers the problem and declares it harmless. When the battle is fierce and every second threatens your life; joy takes you right there and makes you witness firsthand how mean the battle is. When all hope is gone; joy takes the demon by the scruff of his neck and rubs his nose in the dust and shout the Name of Jesus. It announces victory in the midst of the fiery furnace. Joy provides peace in time of trouble and calmness in the midst of the raging storm. Joy frustrates the power of Satan to harm; it nullifies the ability of the fire to burn; it takes away the appetite of lions and forces them to declare a fast for a night. Praise God! The opposite of joy is sorrow. One who does not feed on the word of God will suffer sorrow and he will not stop mourning.
Hear what the weeping prophet says; “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; for I am called by Your Name” Jeremiah 15:16. A heart filled with the word God is a rejoicing heart. Jeremiah said this in the heat of his persecutions. When he was thrown into a pit prison he found His word and, like a cow he chewed cud and meditated upon the promises of God. Suddenly joy started to bubble in his heart and I suppose he was delighted to remember what God said to him when he called him; “Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you to deliver you,” says the LORD.” Jeremiah 1:8
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5
