FOUR STEPS TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH Step 1 Topic 3

Step 1: Study the Word of God

Topic 3: Something special about the word of God

Pastor Maselo Mosomane

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

The word of God is not a product of human intellect; it is given to man by God. God inspired His servants to write. They were not inspired by their knowledge, environment or some sought of eventualities. They were inspired by God. “…knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:20-21. The bible was not written by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

Since it is inspired by God; we can safely say it is a product of God. It is God speaking to man. It has been spoken by God to His servants in a particular part of history and geographical place, yet through this same word God is speaking to humanity throughout ages. When we read the bible; God is speaking to us now. God is a present God. In Him there is no past, present or future; all three time frames are NOW. When He speaks He speaks to past, present and future generations.

One thing special about God is that He never changes. Everything on earth is subject to change. The earth as we see it today is not as it used to be when it was created. From the day Adam and Eve sinned; so many changes took place. What we call natural catastrophes like earthquakes, floods and volcanoes played a decisive role in determining the landscape as we see it today. As the environment changes, people also changed in order to match or cooperate with the new surroundings. Culture changes and new lifestyles are embraced. Most of us are not so old, but in this short lifespan many changes have been witness. Nations disappeared through wars and atrocities; others came to being. Throughout all these metamorphic behaviors, some languages disappeared while others evolved as the environment dictated.

Throughout all these unavoidable changes – so to say; God remained the same. The earth’s form changed, weather and climatic conditions in many geographical regions changed too. People changed; their language, their lifestyle and so many other things. When all these things changed, only God remained the same.

The other thing we must take note about God is that He never dies. God cannot grow old and will never die. He remains forever. Creation will die and disappear; but God will remain. Everything created is subject to change. Only the Creator is not subject to such things. “Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands. They will perish, but You will endure; yes, they will all grow old like a garment; like a cloak You will change them, and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will have no end.” Psalm 102:25-27

God is also reliable. When He says something, He won’t change. His word can be relied upon. Man will say something and keep it as long as it suites him. As soon as what he said seems to challenge his position; he changes it. Governments make laws and establish a department to enforce them. They will do so as long as such laws serve their interest. As soon as the interpretation of the same laws begins to threaten their power; they amend them. But the word of God will remain the same. God remains the same all the time. “I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob” Malachi 3:6

One day a certain king of the Moabites named Balak hired a backslidden prophet to curse Israel. The name of this prophet was Balaam. When He approached the armies of Israel he opened his mouth to pronounce a curse as ordered. But instead he blessed them. This made the king very angry. When he interrogated him; the prophet said; God has bless Israel and He won’t change. He said; “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Numbers 23:19. Even a backslidden prophet knows that God cannot lie. The prophet might have forgotten many things about God, but that He cannot lie; he remembers very well.

The word of God is the same as God; it remains the same all the time. God never changes and His word is eternal. Did you know that even heaven and earth will one day pass away? “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My word will by no means pass away. Matthew 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33. His word is established even before it is spoken. “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.”

The other thing we need to know is that God and His word are one and He will always bring it to pass. If He says something will happen; it will sure happen. Do you remember in the Garden of Eden? He said to Adam; “…but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” Genesis 2:17. God said to Adam; in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. The Serpent came and deceived Eve; they ate but remained standing. The truth is; spiritually they died instantly. But physically they remained in an upright position. Did God lie when He said they shall surely die? Or did the Serpent tell the truth when He said “you will not surely die?” Genesis 3:4

No, my friend; maybe you did not read where I’ve read. “So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died” Genesis 5:5. It does not matter how long the word of God takes; it will finally come to pass. A backslidden prophet said He is no man that He should lie. What God said will ultimately come to pass; even backsliders know this truth. Do not be deceived by the time span. His word is beyond time – it is not limited by time. What did He promise you? I want you to know that the promise will surely come to pass. As sure as the sun rises from the east and goes down the west, His promises shall never fail. Hold this truth as tied as you would hold money in an unsafe place; though it may delay, it will sure come to pass. “For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry” Habakkuk 2:3. God said to Jeremiah when He called Him; “I am watching to make sure my words come true” Jeremiah 1:12

What more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell about His promise to Abraham about Isaac; His promise to the nation of Israel in Egypt when He said He will deliver them from the bondage of Egypt and give them a land that overflows with milk and honey? What about His Messianic promise? Hasn’t He kept His promise? I will borrow a little space and mention His promise for the Gentiles to be included in the family of God? “I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, and will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, as a light to the Gentiles.” Isaiah 42:6
