PROSPERITY: WHERE DID WE GO WRONG? Part 11

He died that I might live and prosper

Pastor Maselo Mosomane

“Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’” Galatians 3:13

We have seen how death reigned from Adam to Moses. How it reigned even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam. All of us who were born of Adam got born into Adam’s sentence. God said “you shall surely die” and indeed Adam and his wife died. He also said “in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life” and it happened. We are born into Adam’s death and Adam’s poverty. While we are waiting for the physical death to conclude Adam’s sentence we must work hard to earn a living. We who were to inherit the wealth of Eden and the good of the land are scratching the ground for our living. We toil all the days of our lives and in the sweat of our face we eat bread. This will continue until we return to the ground.

In the midst of this hopeless situation God appointed Moses the son of Amram and Jochebed the Levite to give the law to His people. God commanded Moses to write the law and give it to Israel. The bible says death reigned from Adam to Moses. Adam represents the FALL and Moses represents the LAW. Death reigned from the day that man fell until the day that God gave the law. The law demanded total OBEDIENCE from hearers thereof. When He gave them the law He said; “You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them.” Leviticus 18:5. Paul later quoted the same scripture and wrote; “The man who does those things shall live by them.” Romans 10:5

You will remember that God promised Adam that the Seed of the woman will bruise the devil’s head. While the people were still waiting for the Seed; the law provided a temporary relief. The law provided the people with hope for the Seed who was to come. The law was not the promise – it was also not the Seed. However; for time being it served a purpose. Though it could not produce spontaneous and lasting obedience; it enforced obedience. Those who obey would live, but those who disobey would die without mercy. The law was not meant to solve the problem but to point at the problem. It was meant to expose our shortcomings.

The law and its demand for rituals is not the promise but could keep those who obey it alive until the promise comes. It was a shadow of good things to come. It could not take way our sins nor change our situation. For atonement the law demanded animal blood to cover the sin of one who sinned. When man fell, he fell so low – he fell lower than animals. It’s a shame that; compared to man, animals were found to be innocent and their blood could save his life. Year after year; transgression after transgression animal blood had to be offered to avert the looming punishment.

It's a wonder God didn't lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us. God kept His promise. Every promise He makes He fulfills. Isaiah the prophet recorded as the Lord was speaking; “for as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, …so shall my word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the things for which I sent it” Isaiah 55:10-11. He promised in the Garden that the Seed of the woman will bruise the devil’s head. Indeed the Seed finally came. Jesus is the Seed of the woman promised to come and bruise the devil’s head. He is the promise of Genesis 3:15.

Jesus came to undo what Adam did. He came to fulfill what the law could only promise. He came to reverse what Adam and the blood of animals could not reverse. The law tried but; since its purpose was only to highlight our need for help, it could only go that far. The law acted as a shadow of what was to come. But “…the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. Jesus shared His innocent blood on the cross of Calvary and the sin fine was paid once and for all. Behold the blood of Jesus washes whiter than the snow. The blood of Jesus is better than the blood of bulls and heifers. Christ’s death fulfilled God’s will.

The bible says; “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’” When He hung on that cruel cross he substituted Adam and his descends, ourselves included. He hung there to deal with SIN

With His death He conquered sin. With His resurrection He conquered death. Did you hear that? In His death Jesus obeyed God and lived. Adam in his life disobeyed God and died. Adam represents DISOBEDIENCE and DEATH. Jesus represents OBEDIENCE and LIFE.

Though He was “…found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:8. He died and was buried. But on the third day He rose from the dead never to die again. Satan suffered a double blow; one: when He died He refused to disobey God, two: when He rose again He refused to stay in the place of the dead. Jesus is alive. He cannot die again. He conquered the deadliest artillery of Satan namely; SIN and DEATH. He conquered Satan in three worlds – on earth where He died, in hell where He rose from and in heaven where He ascended to. That’s why God …has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11. Oh Praise God in Highness!

This is the Jesus John saw on the Isle of Patmos and wrote; “…and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1:1-6

When He rose from the dead He made us kings and priests. We are kings and priests. Kings have a kingdom and kingdoms are rich. Do you see it? We are rich, we are prosperous. Look at yourself and say I am a king. Say again; I am a priest. Say it with the greatest intensity of your voice; I CAN BE RICH AND STILL SERVE GOD for I am a king and a priest.

Praise God again and again!
